In exploring Luke 18:9-14, it is important for us to remember why it is that the Pharisee was not praised for his prayer of gratitude for not being like other people while the tax collector received mercy from God after asking for forgiveness. Given our tendencies to look down on the Pharisee, what can we learn from the despised Pharisee so that we can avoid the same sort of judgmental attitude that the Pharisee has long been condemned for?
